The garden will be open on Friday 20th August from 6:00pm to 9:00pm.

Please bring a picnic if you like.

We hope local residents will be able to take us up on our invitation to enjoy Nymans.

Footpath through Nymans to Handcross

from Chloe Bradbrooke of Nymans

The track repairs in the woods have been completed.

The footpath has now been officially re-opened and some sections of the woodland tracks are better than ever.

Of course until the vegetation has completely grown back there will be a tendency for some sections to get muddy after heavy rain.

Hopefully once again everyone will be able to access and fully enjoy the woods.

NEIGHBOURHOOD WATCH

"Here is a message received from our Police Community Support Officer, Jayne Milne:-

I have just spoken to Mrs X who lives in Staplefield. She received a call yesterday from Direct Response Security - this is the company that offers free or discounted burglar alarms but then overcharges to monitor the alarm. They have been contacting elderly people in this area on and off for some months now and I think that most people are aware not to deal with them, however just in case, would you mind putting a message in the village newsletter/website?

When Mrs X told them she wasn't interested the caller hung up, but then a short time later another call was received from a man who was quite rude to Mrs X. I suspect that both calls were from the same company. I would be interested to learn of any further incidents like this as it will give me good grounds to contact this company and give them some strong words of advice."

Phone/Computer Scam 12 Jun 10

"I don't know if this if of any interest to you but yesterday someone rang us to say we had a serious problem with our computer. He said he was from Microsoft. My husband kept him talking while he turned our computer off.  The chap told him that to solve the problem he should type PREFETCH UNWANTED in "Run" in the "Start" program.  My husband took no notice of what the man had to say and hung up. When he checked up on Google he found, as expected, that this was a scam of some sort."

I have checked with our IT department at Sussex Police Headquarters and it appears that this entry will bring up a display of files which, at a first glance, indicates lots of errors. It would appear the telephone callers use this image to frighten people, encouraging them to give remote access to their computer to fix and in some cases charge for their service. These are totally random calls. The purpose of the call is to give them access to any information on the PC.

Should you have any concerns on computer safety visit our Sussex Police website or contact your local Police Community Support Officer.

Another scam reported in the village...

I received a call from a 'representative' of BT, informing me that he was disconnecting me because of an unpaid bill. He demanded payment immediately of £31.00, or it would be £118.00 to re-Messaageconnect at a later date.

The guy wasn't even fazed when I told him I was with Virgin Media, allegedly VM have to pay BT a percentage for line rental!

I asked the guy's name - the very 'English' John Peacock with a very 'African' accent - & phone number - 0800 0800 152.

Obviously the fella realized I wasn't believing his story, so offered to demonstrate that he was from BT. I asked how & he told me to hang up & try phoning someone - he would disconnect my phone to prevent this.

AND HE DID!!

My phone was dead - no engaged tone, nothing - until he phoned me again.

Very pleased with himself, he asked if that was enough proof that he was with BT. I asked how the payment was to be made & he said credit card, there & then.

I said that I didn't know how he'd done it, but I had absolutely no intention of paying him, I didn't believe his name or that he worked for BT.

He hung up.

Did 1471 & phoned his fictitious 0800 number – not recognised.

I phoned the police to let them know, I wasn't the first! It's only just started apparently but it is escalating.

Their advice was to let as many people know by word of mouth of this scam. The fact that the phone does go off would probably convince some people it's real, so please let as many friends & family aware of this.

This is good but not that clever. He gave the wrong number - it should have been 0800 800152 begin_of_the_skype_highlighting              0800 800152      end_of_the_skype_highlighting which takes you through to BT Business. The cutting off of the line is very simple , he stays on the line with the mute button on and you can't dial out - but he can hear you trying. (This is because the person who initiates a call is the one to terminate it). When you stop tryiing he cuts off and immediately calls back. You could almost be convinced!

The sad thing is that it is so simple that it will certainly fool the elderly and vulnerable. Obviously, if this scam is real, once they have your credit/debit card details, there is nothing to stop them cleaning out your account.

I received this email this morning; quite amusing as I am not an HSBC customer.

-----QUESTIONS-----

GOOGLE EARTH view of Staplefield has been updated.

Can anyone work out the date of the photo: it looks like early summer '06.

click here if you think you can date it

Looking at the picture of Brantridge School. Our 'New Block' foundations are there but not the block itself. That came in early August 2006. I believe the picture must have been taken in the late July of that year.

Gary

Far be it from be to contradict Gary - but aren't those the Beerfest Marquees in The Tanners garden ?  If so then it's the Mayday Bank Holiday weekend in (I guess) 2006.

Mike Anderson

The common is marked out for the children's sports day. which takes place in late June/early July, so the tents must have been for another event.

Paul

ps my kids tell me that google streetview was 'doing' the village this week. Anyone else see this?

Ruth and I took possession of Warwick Cottage in December 2005.  One of the first acts of garden clearance was to take out the ornamental tree on the drive.  I did this before Christmas 2005.  This tree is still shown on the picture.

So, for those who say it is 2006 I would place a large wager on them being wrong!  It is definitely 2005 (or prior).
